Transcripts: 560-3 & 560-4

Week: 560.3 Guest: Mitch Batkin, Nat'l Dir. Fitness Services, Bally Fitness International Topic: Rules for starting out in exercise Producer/Host: Steve Girard

NEMA: Tips for getting fit....coming up....

SPOT: 15 years in the prevention of heart disease, stroke and trauma - the National Emergency Medicine Association. Call 800-332-6362.

NEMA: So, you're one of the many who are using the impetus of a new year to get in shape again. Mitch Batkin, National Director of Fitness Services for Bally Fitness says there are some things you must take into consideration to be successful....

BATKIN: The number one rule is make it safe. If you're injured of course you're not going to enjoy it because you're not going to be able to do anything. The second rule is make it fun. Because if it's fun, you're going to like it and continue that activity. And then, number three is do an activity that is conducive to reaching your goals. You know, often you can go into any health club and see people that say they want to lose weight, but they're doing an exercise that really doesn't provide that benefit. So what we like to do is make it safe, make fun, make it effective.

NEMA: Batkin says working out with a friend is one of the best ways to stay motivated...and keep from getting injured. If you're too focused on the goal of losing weight, you may forget to have fun, and that's what will keep you working out! I'm Steve Girard, for The Heart of the Matter.

Week: 560.4 Guest: Mitch Batkin, Dir. of Fitness Services, Bally Fitness Topic: Choosing the right workout equipment Producer/Host: Steve Girard

NEMA: Get the right workout stuff!...coming up....

SPOT: NEMA...the National Emergency Medicine Association... fights our worst health enemies - heart disease, stroke, trauma. Call 800-332-6362.

NEMA: I'll bet you think we're going to tell you what kind of exercise equipment to buy. Nope. Mitch Batkin of Bally Fitness has a different message to pass along....

BATKIN: There's an old joke in the fitness world that most people probably have heard...and it's based on the question of, "Sure, there is one exercise that is best for you...and do you know what it is"? It's the one that you like...because that's the one that you'll do...whichever one you will spend the most time on and do regularly and have a good time with it, that's the best one for you.

NEMA: Batkin says it's easy to be influenced into buying a new fitness toy....

BATKIN: It's so often that people will buy a 2 or 3 hundred dollar machine, and it gets to their home and it becomes a clothes hanger because it's not something they love...they did it because it looked great on t.v. So I encourage people to get into a club, and for a few reasons. The atmosphere is very high energy, because there's a lot of people working out. And there's such a variety of things to do.

NEMA: With variety, according to Mitch Batkin, your chance of a successful workout program goes up. I'm Steve Girard for The Heart of the Matter.
