Week: 558.4 Guest: Dr. Charles Goodson, Bariatric physician, South Carolina Topic: Bariatric surgery for the very obese Producer/Host: Steve Girard
NEMA: The last option in losing weight...coming up....
SPOT: NEMA...the National Emergency Medicine Association... fights our worst health enemies - heart disease, stroke, trauma. Call 800-332-6362.
NEMA: For some people, it's their last hope....bariatric surgery, gastric bypass...where your stomach is made smaller or bypassed to ensure a very obese person loses weight and regains health. Dr. Charles Goodson is a bariatric physician practicing in South Carolina..
GOODSON: They force you into lifestyle changes...in other words, if you're the kind of person who really loves to go sit down and have a big meal...you can't do that anymore.
NEMA: It takes about a year and a half for the patient to get down to their final weight...but for anyone who is close to the 100 pound overweight requirement, he does his best to encourage use of a medical and counseling program tandem...
GOODSON: No one should be offered bariatric surgery unless they are declared a complete failure at a medical type program....We're having such good success with the medical programs and long term appetite control medications, there are very few people that really need to have the surgery.
NEMA: If you want to lose the weight, and you haven't contacted a bariatric physician yet...please do it soon, they can put you on the right track. I'm Steve Girard for The Heart of the Matter.
