NEMA: A low dose diuretic is making a good showing in a study called the systolic hypertension in the elderly program, especially promising for older diabetics....Dr. Jeffrey Cutler of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which runs the program...
CUTLER: This particular approach to treatment, which was already shown over all to be effective in preventing stroke and other cardiovascular problems...was just as effective in the diabetics, in fact, in some instances, seemed even more effective.
NEMA: The diuretic cuts strokes and heart attacks in older diabetics by a third. Nearly 600 diabetics were part of the program, about 5 thousand people in all. Cutler says a new, nationwide trial will compare diuretics to three other blood pressure lowering drugs, and involve 40 thousand older patients...a third diabetic...
CUTLER: ...the question arises, as to whether they are as effective, more effective, or less effective than the older treatments.
