Week: 563.5 Guest: Ramona Way, Administrator, Reach Project for Parents, Wilmington, DE Topic: The Parenting Van Producer/Host: Steve Girard

NEMA: Reaching out to communities...coming up...

SPOT: For 15 years, the National Emergency Medicine Association has worked against stroke, heart disease and trauma. Join the effort, call 800-332-6362.

Nema: Ramona Way's job is reaching out to the community, through it's kids and parents. And she does it in a big van kids think is an ice cream truck...it's the Reach Van for parenting in Wilmington, Delaware, sponsored by Zeneca Corporation, Family & Workplace Connection and Children and Families First.

WAY: We tend to believe that, for the most part, everyone should know how to access the services that they need to acquire. But that's a fallacy. There are a lot of people who don't know how to...who don't know who to turn to. And that's all because community isn't what it used to be.

NEMA: The van's scheduled visits draw kids, who draw parents...who ask about immunizations, nutrition, lead testing, and how to get closer to their kids...

WAY: We develop a relationship with them...and through that relationship encourage them to seek, and identify how they can go about improving the quality of their life.

NEMA: The program's chief goal is to provide information about what exists in a community, and find those who would benefit most from it. It's a unique and valuable program. I'm Steve Girard at The Heart of the Matter.
