Week: 576.3

Topic: Don't suffer with allergies!

Host/ Producer: Steve Girard

NEMA: Don't suffer from allergies...coming up...

SPOT: NEMA...the National Emergency Medicine Association...fights our worst health enemies - heart disease, stroke, trauma. Call 800-332-6362.

NEMA: A lot of people out there suffering from allergies...needlessly....this is Dr. Marshall Plaut, of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

PLAUT: Over the counter medications work for people with mild symptoms, but if the over the counter medications are not working, or the symptoms are severe...then it's worth seeing a physician.

NEMA: A proven technique is immunotherapy, or injecting small amounts of what your allergic to into your body to build an immunity...

PLAUT: How long you need to take it and when it's safe to stop varies from person to person. And also, although it is effective, it takes a while to be effective. You may not see maximal benefit for a whole year.

NEMA: Dr. Plaut says get real treatment is allergies are affecting your quality of life....

PLAUT: Is it causing you to miss work, to miss school or perhaps are likely to miss recreational activity like going on a picnic or playing ball.

NEMA: Next in our special on allergies, 'rebound'. I'm Steve Girard at The Heart of the Matter.
