NEMA: Real information on holistic medicine....coming up....
SPOT: For 15 years, the National Emergency Medicine Association has worked against stroke, heart disease and trauma. Join the effort, call 800-332-6362.
NEMA: The book is called The Holistic Pediatrician, and Dr. Kathi Kemper of the University of Washington Bayview Hospital says it came out of her desire to answer her patients questions on natural remedies...
KEMPER: So the book actually brings together the best of mainstream medicine and alternative medicine to address the 25 most common childhood illnesses, and applies the standard of scientific medicine to evaluate whether or not they work and whether or not theyre worth parents spending their money and their time on for their children...and whether or not theyre safe. So, its a very comprehensive approach to common childhood problems, but its also very solidly grounded in science, so parents dont have to worry that theyre going to hear something weird or dangerous or something like that.
NEMA: Dr. Kemper says neither antibiotics nor most cold medications actually help kids when they have a cold...
KEMPER: Save money on those types of products and instead spend it on things that have been proven helpful...like vitamin C, and zinc, and even herb echinacea, which is helpful in boosting the immune system....and good old fashioned home remedies like chicken soup, which our grandmothers may have recommended to us.
NEMA: More with Dr. Kathi Kemper of Bayview Hospital of the University of Washington at Seattle on our next program. Im Steve Girard for The Heart of the Matter.
