Smart Technology Helps Car Seats and Air Bags Work Together
Airbags have saved a tremendous number of lives since becoming standard equipment, but their early designs created a real and serious risk for smaller passengers, particularly children in rear-facing car seats positioned too close to a deploying airbag.
That risk drove significant investment in smart restraint technology — systems designed to detect a passenger’s size, weight, or seating position and adjust how, or whether, an airbag deploys in a crash. The goal is to preserve the life-saving benefit of airbags for adult passengers while reducing the danger they can pose to children and smaller occupants.
Car seat design has evolved alongside this technology, with an increasing focus on proper installation and positioning, since even the best safety technology can’t fully compensate for a car seat that’s installed incorrectly or a child seated in a position that increases their risk.
The most important, and most consistently overlooked, safety step remains simple: keeping children in the back seat, in an appropriately sized car seat or booster, for as long as guidelines recommend, regardless of how advanced the front seat’s airbag technology has become.
NEMA continues to support public education around car seat safety and the evolving technology designed to protect the most vulnerable passengers in a vehicle.
