National Alzheimer’s Council

The National Alzheimer’s Council focuses on education and awareness around Alzheimer’s disease and related forms of dementia, supporting patients, families, and caregivers navigating a diagnosis.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive condition that gradually affects memory, thinking, and the ability to carry out everyday tasks. It’s the most common cause of dementia in older adults, and while there’s currently no cure, early diagnosis and the right support can meaningfully improve quality of life for both patients and the families caring for them.

Early warning signs are often subtle and easy to dismiss as normal aging at first: memory lapses that disrupt daily life, difficulty completing familiar tasks, confusion about time or place, and withdrawal from work or social activities. Recognizing these signs early and seeking a proper evaluation can make a real difference in planning and treatment.

Caregiving for someone with Alzheimer’s brings its own significant physical and emotional toll, and caregiver support and education are just as important as the care provided to the patient. Understanding what to expect at each stage of the disease helps families plan ahead rather than simply reacting as symptoms progress.

NEMA continues to support education and awareness efforts around Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, for patients, caregivers, and the broader community alike.
